The McDowell Senior Center in Marion and the A.C.“Bud” Hogan Community Center in Old Fort are the designated focal point on aging service providers where senior adults come together for a variety of activities, programs and services. The senior centers promotes community awareness of the needs and talents of senior citizens by providing the opportunities to make new friends and renew old friendships, improve physical fitness, learn new skills, get information and advice, develop creatively, volunteer in a variety of different areas and have lunch with friends.
WELLNESS PROGRAMMING INCLUDES:
HEALTH SCREENINGS-
Blood Pressure Checks are held monthly at both centers. Flu Immunization Clinics are held each fall. There is also an annual community senior health fair where a variety of health clinics are offered.
EXERCISE OPPORTUNITIES-
Both centers have exercise rooms providing a variety of equipment including Nu-Step machines, exercise bikes, treadmills and strength training machines. In addition there are fitness classes for all levels of abilities including chair exercise, balance and coordination exercise classes and dance programs.
SENIOR GAMES-
Year-round fitness program designed around athletic competition with the local games held each spring and state finals each fall with a national competition every two years. Some events include walking, golf, table tennis, swimming, shuffleboard, horseshoes, football throws, basketball shooting, track & field events, bocce, spin casting, bowling and more.
(TITLE V) EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM- Participation in Title V program provides older, low income seniors paid work experience.
SHIIP-Senior Health Insurance Information Program-
Volunteers trained by the North Carolina Department of Insurance assist seniors with Medicare Supplements & with Medicare Part D.

LEGAL AID-
Legal Aid of North Carolina will prepare simple wills, power of attorney, living wills for senior citizens by appointment. Free to persons 60+ years of age. Call 659-0821 for more information.
VETERAN’S SERVICES-
A County Veteran Services Representative is located at the McDowell Senior Center Phone to assist veterans and their families. Appointments are requested.
INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE-
Call the Center for information about services for older adults provided through the Senior Center and other sources of assistance.
OPERATION FAN/HEAT RELIEF-
May –September- Fans provided by local energy providers are distributed to seniors who have an existing home situation that presents a threat to the person’s health and well being.
INCOME TAX PREPARATION-
February through April there are volunteers at the McDowell Senior Center helping prepare tax returns at no cost.

HOME DELIVERED MEALS-
Provides a nutritionally balanced meal Monday through Friday to medically home bound persons. Meals are prepared in our kitchen and delivered by volunteers on 14 routes in the county.
IN-HOME AIDE SERVICE-
Aides assist functionally impaired older persons with essential home management, personal care and/or supervision necessary to enable the older adult to remain at home as long as possible.
TRANSPORTATION-
Agency vehicles provide daily transportation to the McDowell Senior Center in Marion and the A.C.“Bud”Hogan Community Center in Old Fort. Shopping for groceries, medicine, paying bills and other services are available. Trips for recreation, social, educational, and other needs are scheduled. Medical transportation is provided by appointment.
